Made in the USA, Hanky Panky is a quintessentially American brand best known for its seamless, comfortable thongs.
The Hanky Panky story began in 1977 when designer Gale Epstein gave her friend Lida Orzeck a birthday present of a lingerie set made from embroidered Victorian handkerchiefs. The two saw an opportunity and struck out in the lingerie business. In 1986 they developed their iconic thong – the 4811 - at a time when changing fashion meant women wanted a solution to the VPL.
Thongs were too risqué then for department stores so they sold to independents. Then in 2004 the Wall Street Journal published a front page article describing their thongs as “lace butter” and business took off.
Today Hanky Panky counts Rihanna, Beyoncé, Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Emma Watson, Eva Longoria and Kim Kardashian West among celebrity customers.
Products are all made in the US, with a strong ethical and environmental focus. The business is still led by Gale and Lida but ownership is now in a trust for the workers.
